Looking for a Norwich Castle Wedding Photographer?

Hey, I’m Matt – a slightly tall, slightly geeky wedding photographer from Norwich! I specialise in bold, fun, candid & documentary-style wedding photography with a timeless look and feel.

I love laid-back weddings where the focus is on you, your day and the people around you. Capturing those moments and emotions, and all the silly stuff in between.

And I love Norwich Castle! It’s probably my most photographed venue, and I know it like the back of my hand.

So, if you’re looking for an experienced wedding photographer for your Norwich Castle wedding, hit that contact button! I’d love to chat.

My Guide to Getting Married at Norwich Castle

1. Location, Location, Location

Norwich Castle is the most central wedding venue in Norwich. It’s a five-minute walk from the city centre and a two-minute walk from Castle Meadow, so it’s super easy to get to. Not to mention super easy to find! It’s not as if it’s hidden away down a back street. It’s ginormous and on a hill, so you can’t miss it!

2. Accessibility / How to Get There

The castle only has parking for the couple, but it’s still very accessible, especially for a city venue. If you don’t know Norwich, the Castle Quarter shopping centre sits right underneath the castle and has a large car park (750 spaces). Queues to get in can be long on peak weekends, but leave plenty of time and you’ll have no trouble getting a space. This is where I always park when I’m photographing a wedding at the castle.

Once you leave the car park, I recommend walking through the shopping centre towards Castle Meadow. From there it’s a very short walk to the base of the castle, where a lift takes you from street level to the main entrance in seconds.

Taxis: You can’t park at the castle, but taxis are (usually) more than happy to drop guests off outside the entrance. I’ve had a couple of occasions where the driver wasn’t keen, but that’s pretty rare. If you have guests who aren’t steady on their feet, a taxi should be able to drop them off without much fuss.

And while it’s not strictly about weddings, the castle has recently had a £27.5 million redevelopment, which has made it far more accessible to everyone.

3. The Benefactors Room

Whatever the weather’s doing outside, this room is always awash with lovely natural light. One side has a beautiful large window that softens everything and fills the room with light. It photographs really well.

The room holds 50 people, and I’ve shot weddings there both large and small. Going back to accessibility, it’s only a very short walk from the castle’s main entrance.

4. Confetti

Because Norwich Castle is a working museum, they don’t want confetti near the building. That’s not a problem at all. In fact, even without that rule, I suspect every photographer would recommend doing confetti on the bridge anyway, and that’s how I approach it, because it just works perfectly!

The bridge is the ideal place for the confetti line (don’t worry, I’ll organise it for you), and with the castle in the background it makes the perfect shot. All you’ve got to do is smile and look amazing!

5. Group Photos

Every wedding has them, and every wedding needs them! You’ve got two options here: on the bridge, or in the gardens at the bottom of the bridge.

If it’s beautiful and sunny, I recommend walking everyone down to the gardens. There are two lovely trees there that make the perfect spot for a group shot.

If it’s wet, or you have a guest or two who isn’t very mobile, it might make more sense to do the group photos outside the castle or on the bridge.

There’s no right or wrong. It all depends on the situation on the day, and both look great!

6. Couples Photos at the Castle

The castle and its gardens offer no end of photo opportunities. You’re really spoilt for choice!

Once confetti and group photos are out of the way, I like to take the couple for a walk around the grounds. The castle makes a fantastic backdrop, and because we’re on a hill, we can also get some shots with Norwich in the background. From there it’s the bridge, then we finish off in the gardens. And if time permits, we can also head into…

7. Norwich City!

Let’s visit the city! The castle is amazing, but so is the city.

My favourite spot is the Royal Arcade. It makes such a stunning photo you’d be mad not to make the most of it, especially as it’s only a five-minute walk from the castle.

A little further on, there’s The Forum, the city streets, and if you’re up for it, Elm Hill. It’s a 10-minute walk away and one of the most picturesque streets in the city.

8. Venues for Your Reception

You may already have plans for after your wedding, but if not, here are my thoughts on some of the best spots in the city.

  • The Cosy Club: I have a real soft spot for this place. In my experience they go above and beyond to make sure your day is perfect. They have lots of space, including some private function rooms.
  • The Ivy: Great food, but space is usually pretty limited, as it’s a restaurant and usually only has room for smaller parties. If your wedding is on the smaller side, this is a great spot.
  • St Andrews Brew House: A lovely pub with some private rooms that are very popular with wedding parties. The only drawback is that if you hire a room, it’s up some pretty steep stairs. So mobility issues might be worth considering.
  • The Assembly House: One of my favourite places in the city, and very experienced at hosting receptions of all sizes. You’re in good hands here.

9. A Little Bit About How I Work at Norwich Castle

Most weddings I photograph at the castle are short ones (but not all!). If I’m there for a few hours, I always plan to arrive a good 30–45 minutes before the ceremony. That way I’m there before most (if not all) of your guests, so when they start arriving I’m ready to capture lots of candids.

During the ceremony, I always try to position myself to get the best view of you both, usually at the front, next to or behind the registrar.

Once the ceremony’s over, it’s usually outside for more candids and confetti. As I’ve mentioned, the best place for this is the bridge, and it’s always good fun!

With confetti done, I recommend we bring all your guests back to the castle for a nice big group photo of everyone, before moving on to the formal group photos.

After that, I usually suggest your guests head off to the next venue while we hang back and get some shots of you both at the castle and around the city (if you’d like).

And finally, if you’re having your reception in the city, we can take a leisurely walk there and grab some city shots along the way. 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions

Up to 50, and that includes your two witnesses and your photographer. You two and the registrars don’t count.

I do! If you hold a Blue Light Card (or you work for the NHS, emergency services, teaching, or the armed forces), get in touch, and I’ll happily apply a discount to your wedding photography package. The exact discount varies slightly depending on which package you book, the venue and the date, but it’s always a meaningful amount rather than a token gesture. Just mention your Blue Light Card (or your role) when you get in touch, and I’ll factor it into the quote from the start.

For a full-day wedding, 650–1000 is pretty typical. Of course, so much depends on guest numbers and what you have going on during the day. More guests typically mean more photos. And if you have a bouncy castle that your tipsy aunt decides to have a go on, expect even more photos — because who doesn’t like to laugh at a drunk family relative on a bouncy castle? Every photo in your final gallery is individually edited and chosen because it’s actually worth keeping. I don’t bulk-deliver every shot I take; I cull the near-duplicates, the missed-focus frames, and the ones where your nan blinked — so what you end up with is a gallery of really good photos rather than a hard drive full of filler.

Half-day bookings usually come in around 300–500 photos, depending on what’s covered. Either way, you’ll have plenty.

In 3–5 weeks after your ceremony, I’ll upload your images to a private online gallery. These are web-sized and perfect for online sharing on Facebook, Instagram and anywhere else you’d like to show them off. You’ll get a password-protected link you can share with family and guests, and there’s an optional built-in shop if anyone wants to order prints or books directly.

Then, roughly two weeks after the gallery goes live, the full high-resolution versions land on a branded USB/memory stick, delivered to your door. These are the print-ready files — very high resolution — so you can make albums, wall prints, or whatever else you fancy. If you’ve booked me for a full day, you’ll also receive a hand-picked selection of printed photos as part of the package. I want you to actually see your images in real life, not just on a screen.

Absolutely! I’m more than happy to offer discounts for out-of-season weddings or Monday–Thursday dates. Peak weekends in summer book up fastest and cost more across the industry; mid-week and off-season dates are often a lot of fun, a lot less stressful to plan (venues have more availability, suppliers are less stretched), and come with a nicer price tag attached. “Out of season” for me usually means November through March, and mid-week is anything Monday to Thursday. If your date falls into one of those brackets, let me know when you get in touch, and I’ll factor the discount straight into your quote.

Castle Quarter car park is probably the best option for most people. It’s directly under the castle, so it’s only a short walk to the entrance.

Yes. A sound system is provided; bring your music on a phone and connect via Bluetooth.

No. Flash isn’t allowed inside the castle, but the big window gives lovely natural light, so it isn’t needed.

Yes. It must be biodegradable, and it isn’t allowed outside the main entrance. The bridge is the perfect spot anyway.

I like to get a small selection ready a day or two after the wedding, with the rest coming over in 3–5 weeks, depending on the time of year.

Yes, it’s a working museum, but your room is private. Do expect visitors to be milling about when you arrive and leave.

I have a relaxed approach, never putting anyone under pressure, leaving you and your guests to be themselves.

Always natural, always honest – Capturing your wedding day as it is.

We booked Matt to capture our spring wedding in Norwich and we are so glad we did! We could not be happier with the photos, they are beyond stunning and we have loved showing them off to all our family and friends.

One of the main parts of the day that my friends and family still talk about is the photos! He managed to somehow be completely invisible and capture moments without anyone knowing he was there! I particularly love all the candid photos we have of people smiling, talking and enjoying their day. These are some of the things we missed out on while being the bride and groom. The photos he took made us feel like we were always there.

I wish I could rate higher than 5 stars!

Matt shot our wedding day at Norwich Castle and Dragon Hall, and the photos are just phenomenal, we’re both so happy with the whole gallery and the comments from friends and family have been glowing.

Throughout the process, Matt was excellent in communicating with us, getting a feel for our interests and how we’d like the photos to be shot. It was super easy to get all invoices paid up and get the show on the road!

On the day, Matt was superb. Friendly, approachable and utterly hilarious, he really made it such a fun time. We’re not the types to take many photos, so it was a bit daunting to have so many in such a short space of time, but Matt put us at ease and made it easy.

I’d recommend him to anyone, without a second thought!
