I’ve photographed many weddings at Southwood Hall, and they have all been amazing. It’s easily one of my favourite wedding venues in Norfolk. Not to mention the team always knock it out of the park.
Everything about Soutwood just works. The bridal suite is simply one of the best out there. Bright and spacious, ideal for morning prep photos, with enough space to really lounge and take it all in! And once your ready, it is a short walk to the Barn itself.
Unlike many other barns, Southwood is awash with natural light. It’s a stunning space and ideal for wedding photos and capturing all those amazing moments.
And that’s not all – The gardens (and the secret garden) are all quite lovely, and the perfect spot to get away from your guests (for just a bit) to capture some couple’s photos.
And if you pick the right time of year, you can also fit in some sparklers!

A mini Guide To Southwood Hall
1. Natural Light
Unlike many barn-based wedding venues, Southwood had loads of natural light! During the ceremony itself, you’ll be awash with light as one side of the venue is all glass! It photographs so well, and I love it!
When it comes to light, it doesn’t get much better. Just check these two out!
2. Stunning morning preparations
Taking the natural light vibe from the barn, the bridal suite is equally bright, airy and wonderful. With a full kitchen and stacks of space, with sofas to lounge on, get chatting and get celebrating! And just get the wedding vibe going!
Photographing morning prep is always a fantastic experience. I can’t fault this space. It’s perfect.
3. accommodation on site
Some venues want you to arrive on the day and sometimes leave on the same day, but who wants that hassle!?
If you want to stay the night before and leave the day after, Southwood has you fully covered here! It has a range of buildings that cover pretty much any need.
The main selling point is Cartshed Lodge (which doubles up as the bridal suite) it has a couple of bedrooms, a kitchen and even a spa/hot tub which can’t be bad!
A short walk from this, there are the 2 houses, both fully kitted out with kitchens, bedrooms and lounges, not to mention Tv’s and games consoles.
From a wedding photography perspective, this is awesome. It means from the moment I arrve both of you are within walking distance. It means for morning prep, you’re both covered.
4. Drinks Reception
Now you’re married, and the hard work is done its time to get the party started.
Immediately after the ceremony, Anna and the team will move your guests outside. The confetti photos are usually taken here. This is another reason to love Southwood. It’s the perfect space for this kind of photo, no dragging you and your guests around the grounds/venue, it’s literally open a door, get everyone lined up, and from there we will nail it!
With confetti done, I always like to take one large group photo of all your guests – as we have all your guests here already, it’s a good time to do it. And again, the steps of the venue are perfect for this. With you two front and centre, and surrounded by your awesome guests, we can get some amazing group photos!
5. Group Photos
Because Southwood has plenty of space, we as photographers are a little spoiled for choice when it comes to group photos, and that’s a good thing!
Looking at the weather/light/sun on the day will dictate the route we go in, but it could be photos on the field, or around the step, and if its raining, inside the barn….. Or we could take advantage of the giant bench, which is another amazing feature of this venue! But whatever route we go down, Southwood has you more covered!
6. Couples Photos
Again, we really are spoilt at Southwood!
Another positive when it comes to couples’ photos we have loads of options.
Within a very short walk from the barn, we have some stunning spots as well as a secret garden. I’ve photographed weddings at Southwood at all times of the year, and it’s never been a problem finding those perfect spots. And did I mention they also have a swing!
7. Candid photos
The backbone of any wedding photographer! And Southwood makes it so easy!
Because of the space, it’s always a pleasure to get candid wedding photos here, there’s plenty of awesome spots that people just love to occupy and socialise in, not just from inside the barn but around the seating outside to the cows in the field…. that’s right…Southwood has cows! Time to capture some awesome Moo-Ments (I’ll get my coat….)
8. Speeched at Southwood Hall
Speeched at Southwood Hall couldn’t be easier! or more memorable!
However you arrange the seating and the tables, the barn is open enough that everyone gets a good view. And if someone is not all that keen on really projecting their voice, Anna can get the microphone out!
I’ve been lucky enough to photograph some amazing speeches here, not to mention some epic entrances by the couple too!
9. I love the symmetry!
This ones definatly a selfish one! I love symmetry! Especially during the ceremony. Be it the view from the back against the large window, or the all-important first kiss. Getting the couple lined up in the middle of the frame, with the guests on either side, is the stuff Wedding photography dreams are made of 😛
10. Lets get that party started
With the cake cut done its time for the first dance and the party that follows!
Anna and the team will empty the room of tables aheard of time and get the space clear and ready.
When the time rolls around (usually around 7.30) someone (The DJ, Anna or me) will get your guests into place and around the walls encircling the dance floor, before you two make your entrance.
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to the first dance; sometimes you can dance the whole song away, other times you might choose just to dance to the first chorus. Whatever you do, just be yourselves. You’ll have an amazing time.
And with the first dance done, it’s time for you and all your guests to hit the dance floor!
11. Bonus....Sparklers!
The team at Southwood are sparklers experts!
If it gets dark early, you’ve got to do sparklers! With the barn in the background, it just looks perfect. And everyone (esp the kids) loves this. It’s like confetti but more dangerous! What’s not to love

Rock up & be Awesome!
If I’m with you for 3 or 12 hours, I’m there to tell your story – capturing all the action as the day unfolds. All the emotions, the laughs, the first looks, grins, smiles and tears to the high-fives!
I have a relaxed approach, never putting anyone under pressure, leaving you and your guests to be themselves.
My style is friendly and unobtrusive. After all, it’s your wedding day, not my photoshoot. It’s not just about the big moments, but the little ones in between.
Matt was the perfect choice for our wedding photographer at Southwood, and he really did make our day so special! He captured our day with beautiful, natural and candid style snapshots, and we couldn’t thank him more.
Matt was really great to communicate with (something that is really important in a wedding vendor), and I felt like nothing was too much trouble. I explained to my husband to be was not keen on photos, and Matt took us to a gorgeous woodland location and we had a pre-wedding photoshoot. I love Matt’s style of photography, and he blended amazingly well in the background of our big day, which meant he was able to get some beautiful, natural, in the moment snapshots.
