The Assembly House Wedding Photography Guide

One of my favourite Norwich City Wedding Venues!

There is so much to love about this stunning Norwich venue.

Situated in the centre of the city, The Assembly House has it all. Ideal for large and small weddings, this Grade I listed building has both charm and magic!

I’ve photographed quite a few weddings at The Assembly House, and it’s always been an absolute pleasure. In fact, one story I tell couples about this venue is how well they treat the vendors — not just me, but everyone. At every wedding (usually when I arrive and multiple times throughout the day), a member of the team will ask if I’m good for drinks and if I need anything.

And this is just brilliant, because not only does it mean I get an amazing coffee when I need one (win!), but if they are treating me this well, just think how well they will be treating you on your wedding day.

So, looking past the spectacular building, the amazing facilities, and the gorgeous location, the care and attention that the team there put into every wedding is really worth its weight in gold!

Some Assembly House Highlights

I’ve put together this page as a comprehensive guide to help couples navigate some of the most important decisions for their big day — not just finding the perfect wedding photographer, but also discovering a wedding venue that truly reflects who you are as a couple and sets the stage for the celebration you’ve always dreamed of.

The Assembly House - A stunning venue in Norwich City Centre

A wedding photographers guide to the Assembly House

1. Perfect for weddings large and small

The Assembly House truly is the perfect venue, regardless of how many guests you’re expecting.

The Music Room is stunning and grand — there is simply no other venue in the city with a comparable space. Beautifully proportioned with soaring high ceilings and sparkling chandeliers, this Georgian room works perfectly whether you’re hosting an intimate wedding of 30 guests or something a little grander with 100 or more.

If you’re looking for something more intimate, The Pierce Room is their smaller but equally beautiful option. Situated upstairs, it’s a bright and airy space with an abundance of natural light, giving it a wonderfully warm and relaxed atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting.

Either room really is ideal for photographs. I’ve found that the warm cream and yellow tones of The Music Room complement couples’ skin tones beautifully, while the natural light that floods into The Pierce Room makes everything — from the décor to the happy couple — look and photograph wonderfully.

2. A stunning space for morning prep

As a hotel, the Assembly House has no shortage of beautiful rooms in which to get ready. The most popular one for morning preparations is “Room One”. It’s a lovely space with a stunning bathroom and an enviable freestanding bathtub. Situated just off the courtyard, it’s only a short walk to the main building, which means I’m already on-site and ready to capture guests arriving for your best day ever!

This room is something special. The Music Room is a truly stunning setting for a ceremony, and it photographs beautifully at every angle. Despite comfortably holding a full room of guests, there’s still plenty of space to move around and capture those classic wedding photos!

One thing that makes it even more unique is the stage and grand piano. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting a couple of weddings here where the couple arranged a live pianist. It’s one of those touches that elevates the entire day. There are no venues in the city that have a comparable space.

3. The Beautiful Music Room

4. The Pierce Room

A gorgeous, bright white space is perfect for smaller ceremonies.

5. Reception

With the ceremony complete and all the formalities wrapped up, the registrars will call you to the top of the aisle and make the announcement you’ve been waiting for — you’re married! (Mission accomplished!) You’ll then make your way back down the aisle and through the double doors into the magnificent Grand Hall. That’s the hard work done, time for a drink (or two!)

6. The perfect setting for Confetti (just watch out for that pond!)

Nah….the pond is absolutely fine — just remember it’s there when walking backwards during the confetti! I think every wedding photographer shares the same fear of one day taking an unexpected dip! After watching countless videos online, I’m convinced the common pond is the natural enemy of wedding photographers everywhere 😛

Confetti at the Assembly House is always a laugh. Get everyone lined up, give the couple a thumbs up, and let the magic happen!

7. Couples Photos

The Assembly House has some truly lovely spots for couple portraits — and not just outside the main building itself. Hidden away around the side of the venue lies a beautifully secluded garden that is an absolute gem. It’s a wonderful space that I suspect most guests walk right past without ever knowing it’s there.

A short walk up the road brings you to Chapelfield Gardens, which is always well worth a visit. In the summer months, especially, the park is usually buzzing with the public — and you’re practically guaranteed a few enthusiastic cheers from the locals once they see you two!

8. Speeches at The Assembly House

Speeches at the Assembly House typically take place inside the Music Room, and it really is the perfect setting for them because it’s lovely and large, and everyone gets a good view! And if needed, the team at the Assembly House are always on hand with microphones!

I’ve photographed speeches at weddings of all sizes in this room, from intimate gatherings to full houses, and they always work brilliantly.

9. The Hobart Room

This gorgeous room is very popular with couples hosting smaller weddings, or those who have married at the Castle and are looking for the perfect reception venue. I’ve photographed this space a few times, and I simply love the sky blue walls, gold stars, and decorative plates — it’s like something straight out of Bridgerton!

10. Time to hit the Dance floor

The Music Room transforms effortlessly as the evening unfolds — the same stunning space that hosted your ceremony earlier in the day takes on a whole new atmosphere once the music turns up and the drinks start flowing. And speaking of drinks, the room is fully kitted out with its own bar, meaning everything you need is right there without guests ever having to wander far.

11. Bonus...Cupcakes & Afternoon Tea

Who doesn’t love cakes! I mean, look at this!

The Assembly House is known for many things, but perhaps their afternoon teas are the most famous. It’s a little fun, it’s a little unusual, but why not!?

Assembly House How I work

Rock up & be Awesome!

Whether I’m with you for 3 hours or 12, my job is simple — to tell your story as it unfolds. Every emotion, every laugh, every first look and quiet glance. The happy tears, the enormous grins, the heartfelt embraces and the enthusiastic high-fives on the dancefloor.

My approach is relaxed and unobtrusive.  The Assembly House provides such a naturally beautiful and characterful backdrop that my job is simply to be present, stay out of the way, and let the day breathe. You and your people, being exactly yourselves — that’s where the magic is.

Always natural. Always honest.

Matt photographed our wedding day, and he was outstanding. From start to finish he got so many amazing pictures, some of which you don’t even realise he’s taking. He is exceptional value for money, and was completely relaxed about how long he stayed – and so many photographers are not.
