Bateman’s Barn Wedding Photographer
Wedding Photography at Bateman's Barn, Suffolk
Before their wedding at Bateman’s Barn in Suffolk, we had an engagement shoot on the Norfolk coast (more info here). Within seconds of meeting them both, I knew not only that they were going to be amazing fun, but their wedding wasn’t going to be anything less than AMAZING!
Bateman’s Barn is one of Suffolk’s most beautiful and charming wedding venues — a stunning converted flint barn set in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, near Halesworth. With its exposed timber beams, natural stone walls, and gorgeous outdoor ceremony space framed by two
sweeping oak trees, it’s the kind of place that was made for a wedding. The team there — led by the wonderful Nicole — are absolutely brilliant at making sure everything runs perfectly. If you’re planning a Suffolk barn wedding, it’s genuinely one of the most special venues in the county.
Morning Prep
Such a lovely space for photos — arriving around 3 hours before the ceremony, I was welcomed with smiles, laughter and some lovely food! Antonia and the girls were all in their element, but things were running a little behind schedule. Try as you might, sometimes weddings just do that. But none of this worries anyone — and I’ve photographed enough weddings to know it usually works itself out. This morning it absolutely did. Everyone got to the ceremony on time.
Arriving at Bateman's Barn
Once prep was done, I was back in the car to get to Bateman’s Barn — having never shot a wedding there before, I was in for a bit of a treat. It’s amazing. The flint barn itself is
absolutely stunning, and the outdoor ceremony area — framed by those two beautiful trees — is unlike anywhere else I’ve photographed. The whole venue has this incredible combination of rustic charm and relaxed elegance that just works perfectly for photography. And Nicole, the wonderful lady who runs the place, is equally amazing. Thanks again, Nicole, for making everyone’s day a solid 10/10.
Upon arriving, everything and everyone was in full wedding mode — Ollie was busy welcoming people, and the wedding guests were doing what wedding guests do! The perfect time to grab loads of candid photos before the main event.
The Ceremony...AKA, THE MAIN EVENT!
If you’re having an outdoor wedding, I hope you have one as amazing as this one. Apart from a little wind, this is about as perfect as you could hope for. A wedding ceremony under those two stunning trees at Bateman’s Barn, Suffolk, is simply perfect — and the sun was ramped up to 11.
The ideal summer wedding.
With Ollie waiting, Antonia finally made her grand entrance. You couldn’t ask for anything more perfect. I think her dad was especially proud.
Chinese Tea Ceremony
This was a new experience for me — and honestly one of the highlights of the entire day.
After the ceremony, Antonia and Ollie made a quick getaway to get changed, and then the Chinese tea Ceremony began. It’s a beautiful tradition rooted in Chinese culture — a way for the newlyweds to formally show gratitude and respect to their families by serving tea.
Everyone gets involved, there are toasts and short speeches, plenty of laughter and applause, and lots of tea! Watching two families come together through this tradition was one of the most touching things I’ve had the privilege of photographing at a wedding, and I’d love to do it again.
Speeches!
We moved inside out of the sun for the speeches — not that anyone was complaining on such a scorching day! The barn interior at Bateman’s Barn is just as impressive as the outside: stone floors, exposed timber beams, soft natural light pouring in.
The speeches set the tone perfectly for the rest of the evening — warm, funny, and full of stories that had the whole room either in stitches or reaching for a tissue. This is exactly why I love photographing weddings. These moments are completely unrepeatable, and being trusted to capture them is a genuine privilege.
First Dance and the conga to end all gongas!
Back in the barn for the first dance! Antonia & Ollie had this all planned out — first the first dance, which ticked every box, and then… CONGA! Led by Ollie and picking up the whole room as they went, everyone got involved. So much so that I even lost a shoe in the chaos. But we won’t let that get in the way of capturing every possible moment.
As the evening moved on and the sun started to set over the Suffolk countryside, I grabbed a fewmore dance floor shots before calling it a night. It had been a long, hot, brilliant day — and one I totally loved.

Bateman's Barn Review
Antonia & Ollie
We absolutely love our engagement and wedding photos!! Matt captured so many beautiful candid moments with natural edits that feel timeless. It’s been wonderful to relive our day through the photos and also see the little interactions we missed at the time.
We’re so pleased we had Matt as our wedding photographer at Batesman’s Barn — he was approachable, professional, and friendly throughout, from the initial consultation right through to the big day. We hadn’t thought we needed an engagement shoot, but we’re so glad it was part of the package. It gave us a chance to get to know Matt and his style, feel more comfortable in front of the camera, and get a glimpse of how the wedding photos would turn out.
We highly recommend him. Thank you so much Matt! xx
