Ivy House Wedding Photographer
Ivy House Country Hotel sits just outside Lowestoft in Suffolk, and it’s one of those venues that has something for every part of the day.
A beautiful barn for the ceremony, landscaped gardens for portraits and confetti, a marquee for larger receptions, and enough character in the grounds to keep a photographer busy from morning to last dance. As a Suffolk wedding photographer who covers venues across Norfolk and Suffolk, I’ve shot at a fair few country hotels — and Ivy House stands out.
The barn is warm and intimate, the gardens give you genuine space to work with, and the team there know how to run a wedding day without making it feel like a production line. It just flows. Which, for documentary wedding photography, makes all the difference.
A beautiful summer's day - the perfect start to a wedding
A beautiful summer wedding at the Ivy House! An epic day with a hint of Dungeons & Dragons!
Natalie and Saxon’s summer wedding at the Ivy House Country Hotel in Suffolk was nothing short of magical. From the heartfelt moments during morning preparations to the enchanting Dungeons & Dragons-themed festivities. An amazing day, and for a geek like me a real pleasure to photograph!
Morning Prep
The day began like many others, with the bustling energy of morning prep. Natalie was surrounded by her friends and sisters, creating a lively atmosphere as they prepared for the ceremony ahead. Amongst the whirlwind of activity, we managed to fit in a reveal shot for both the bridesmaids and Natalie’s dad — always a highlight of the morning, and always a little emotional.
As the morning guests arrived, the sun was out in full force (thank you, British Weather!). It was quite nice to be heading into the barn for the actual ceremony, saving everyone from getting baked outside.
A stunning barn ceremony
Natalie and Saxon’s ceremony was equally fun and equally emotional — the perfect way to exchange vows, with loads of cute little smiles and laughs throughout. The barn at Ivy House is a brilliant ceremony space. Natural light, warm wooden beams, and enough intimacy to make even a big guest list feel like a close gathering.
Everything about it lends itself to documentary photography — there’s nowhere to hide, and the emotions just sit right there on the surface.
Confetti & couple portraits
I’m not one of those wedding photographers who micro-manage everything. I’m a big fan of letting the couple be themselves — it feels more natural and honest that way. And the gardens at Ivy House give you plenty of space to find the light and let things breathe.
Back inside, the speeches were really something. Natalie’s dad, who isn’t a big fan of talking in front of large groups, did something genuinely special: he wrote a song for Natalie and played it on a big screen for everyone to see.
Super sweet and totaly personal — exactly the kind of moment that makes documentary wedding photography worth doing.
Now, let’s talk about the cake. Natalie and Saxon are big Dungeons & Dragons fans, and their cake was themed entirely around it — complete with miniatures, dice, and all the detail you’d hope for. It was so cool.
After cutting the cake, they hit the dance floor for their first dance. And you’d think a Dungeons & Dragons-themed cake was enough — well, to everyone’s surprise, Natalie and Saxon had come prepared. Turns out there were outfits of elves and knights hidden away. Lots of guests got dressed up and danced the night away in full costume — fake beards, pointed ears, rubber swords, the lot.
I’ve done plenty of weddings and photographed plenty of dance floors, but none with elves and knights battling it out to the playlist. One to remember for sure.
Ivy House Country Hotel is a genuinely brilliant place to get married — and if you’re planning a wedding there, I’d love to be your photographer.
