A relaxed Norwich city wedding at The Georgian Townhouse, with a romantic Plantation Garden portrait session.

If you’re researching  The Georgian Townhouse as a Norwich wedding venue, or you’re just here to see what a small, beautifully relaxed Norwich city wedding actually looks like, you’re in the right place. Rachel & Nick chose The Georgian Townhouse for its boutique-hotel feel and its location — a few minutes’ walk from one of my favourite secret spots in the whole city, The Plantation Gardens. That single decision turned the day into one of the most photogenic Norwich weddings I’ve shot

Morning Prep at Rachel's Home

Rachel got ready at home, so I headed over there to capture those all-important morning-of-the-wedding images. She was on great form and looked amazing in a fitted satin off-the-shoulder dress that gave her a beautiful silhouette in every frame. Her long hair was elegantly styled, and she carried a gorgeous posy of pink flowers.

Just before we headed off to the ceremony I grabbed a really special “father seeing the bride” moment — quiet, unguarded, the kind of frame I love getting as a documentary wedding photographer.

The Ceremony at The Georgian Townhouse, Norwich

The wedding ceremony was held at **The Georgian Townhouse in Norwich**, in their Pembroke Room — a lovely, intimate space with its own bar and gardens, perfect for a smaller ceremony.

Rachel was walked down the aisle by her father to be greeted by Nick, who looked very smart in a dark blue three-piece suit. With approximately 50 guests, it was a smallish, intentionally intimate wedding — and the atmosphere was exactly the better side of that scale: warm, focused, every reaction visible.

After a lovely service, Rachel and Nick walked back down the aisle as husband and wife to rapturous applause from their guests, then a fun confetti moment outside, and then a drinks reception. So far, so perfect.

A Walk to Plantation Garden — Norwich's Secret Garden

This is where Rachel & Nick’s choice of venue paid off in spades. Once drinks were underway, we walked the entire wedding party around to The Plantation Gardens for the couple’s and group photos. It’s the kind of group walk that ends up as some of the loosest, happiest frames of the day — everyone chatting, laughing, slightly fizzy with prosecco, the bride and groom leading the way.

If you don’t know it, Plantation Garden is a three-acre **Grade II English Heritage registered garden** established over 100 years ago. Locals know it as “Norwich’s secret garden”. It’s tucked away beside a Roman Catholic Church and boasts a huge Gothic fountain, layered flower beds, sweeping lawns, an Italianate terrace, a medieval terrace wall, woodland walkways, rustic bridges and a 10-metre Victorian-style greenhouse.

For wedding photography, it’s basically a cheat code. I was spoilt for choice for backdrops — every corner you turn is another little vignette. Soft light through the greenhouse, romantic symmetry on the gothic fountain steps, intimate shots in the woodland paths. Take a look.

A Cheeky Detour Inside the Catholic Church Next Door

After Plantation Gardens we cheekily snuck into the Roman Catholic church right next door — The light inside that building is something else, and it produced one of my favourite images of the entire day. Always worth asking. Always worth saying yes when a couple is up for an unscheduled five-minute detour.

Reception and Speeches Back at The Georgian Townhouse

Everybody then headed back to The Georgian Townhouse for the wedding reception. Speeches were before food, which is always a good idea and were all very well received. And were followed by a delicious wedding breakfast prepared by The Georgian Townhouse’s team of talented in-house chefs.
Evening celebrations started with the cutting of a delicious-looking wedding cake, followed by a romantic first dance for Rachel and Nick. Not that they were on the dancefloor alone for long. Their guests were up for a party, and it wasn’t long before guests were tearing up the dancefloor!

Why The Georgian Townhouse + Plantation Garden Works for Norwich Weddings

Compact wedding day footprint. Ceremony, drinks, garden photoshoot, reception, evening party — all within a 5-minute walk in central Norwich. No wasted hours in cars between locations.

Boutique-hotel feel. The Georgian Townhouse has a hotel side too, so couples and guests can stay over. That makes morning prep on-site easy and means nobody has to drive home.

The Pembroke Room. A beautiful, intimate ceremony space with its own bar and access to the gardens — ideal for weddings of around 30-60 guests.

In-house catering. No coordinating an external caterer; the in-house chefs do excellent food.

The Plantation Garden on the doorstep. Probably the single best portrait location in central Norwich — and the access fee (currently a few pounds per head) goes to the registered charity that maintains it.

The cathedral next door. If you ask nicely you can sometimes get a couple of frames inside the Cathedral of St John the Baptist — a five-minute detour for one of the most dramatic images of the day.
