Megan & Sam
Pentney Abbey Wedding | Norfolk Wedding Photography
Some venues make a wedding photographer’s job easy. Pentney Abbey is one of those rare places. The moment a couple tells me they’re getting married here, I know we’re going to create something truly special together. Nestled in the heart of Norfolk, Pentney Abbey is one of the county’s most sought-after wedding venues — and having photographed there, I can tell you that every bit of the hype is deserved.
Megan and Sam’s wedding day was everything you’d hope for when you book a venue like this: sunshine, laughter, tears (the happy kind), a dog as ring bearer, a sword for cutting the cake, and enough joy to fill every frame. Here’s the story of their stunning Pentney Abbey wedding day.
What Is Pentney Abbey Like as a Wedding Venue?
Pentney Abbey sits in a peaceful corner of West Norfolk, not far from King’s Lynn, and it has this wonderfully distinctive barn-meets-church energy that’s incredibly photogenic. The exposed stone, the soaring ceiling, the natural light — it all adds up to a venue that barely needs any decoration, because the architecture does all the heavy lifting.
For photographers, it’s a dream. The ceremony room offers dramatic backdrops without being fussy, and the grounds give you a genuine variety of settings — from formal garden spaces to wilder, more natural landscapes perfect for relaxed couple portraits. Whether you love clean, bright editorial shots or more moody, documentary-style images, Pentney Abbey works for both.
It also has that rare quality of feeling intimate even when it’s full. Guests never feel lost in a vast space — there’s always warmth in the room.
The Morning — Bridal Prep and Getting Ready
Like most wedding mornings, this one started with a McDonald’s breakfast (a photographer’s secret weapon) and a cautious look at the weather app. Thankfully, Norfolk was putting its best foot forward — despite the mild temperature, the sun came out and stayed out all day.
When I arrived at the venue, Megan and her bridal party were already deep into wedding mode — hair, makeup, laughter, and that wonderful chaotic energy that only happens on a wedding morning. Megan’s mum made me a cup of tea, which is honestly one of the best starts to any wedding day. I then nipped over to spend some time with Sam and his groomsmen, who were looking sharp and in great spirits.
Photographing the preparation is one of my favourite parts of the day. It’s where the real emotions live — the quiet moments between a bride and her mum, the banter between groomsmen, the small details like jewellery, shoes and flowers that take months of planning and deserve to be documented properly.
The Ceremony — A Pentney Abbey Wedding to Remember
The ceremony room at Pentney Abbey is genuinely stunning. Its barn-church hybrid style gives it a feeling that’s hard to pin down — rustic but refined, historic but never stuffy. It’s the kind of room that takes your breath away when you walk in.
Sam was waiting up front with his best man, that familiar mix of nerves and excitement on his face. And then Megan walked in — and everything changed. Sam’s reaction was one of those moments that remind you why wedding photography matters so much. It’s not about the pretty backgrounds or the technical skill; it’s about capturing the look on someone’s face when they see the person they love walking towards them. That’s the shot.
One special addition to this ceremony? Goose — Megan and Sam’s beloved dog, who had the very important job of ring bearer. Photographing a dark-coated dog in a dimly lit venue is a genuine photographic challenge, but we pulled it off, and Goose was absolutely one of the stars of the day.
The Confetti Shot — Pentney Abbey Does It Perfectly
Every venue has its confetti moment, but Pentney Abbey has one of the best setups I’ve seen. The couple stayed hidden behind the huge double doors at the front of the Abbey while everyone lined up outside. Then, with a wink and a thumbs up, the doors swung open to reveal Megan and Sam — and the confetti flew.
The reaction from the guests was brilliant. It’s one of those moments where everyone’s genuinely delighted, and the photos reflect that. If you’re getting married at Pentney Abbey, please do the confetti throw — you will not regret it.
Speeches, Unicorn Headgear & an Outstanding Wedding Cake
The table plan alone told you everything you needed to know about Megan and Sam as a couple. They’d sourced old photos of every guest and incorporated them into the design — the kind of thoughtful, personal touch that makes guests feel truly seen. People were loving it as they found their seats.
The speeches were fantastic. All of them hit the mark — funny, heartfelt, and personal. But the enduring image from that part of the day will always be Megan delivering her speech in a full unicorn headpiece. I don’t know where it came from. I don’t need to know. I just know it made for one of my favourite photographs of the year.
And the cake …….
Did I mention Megan is also an amazing cake maker?
Cake cuts! usually a pretty standard photo from a photography perspective but this was a little different for two reasons.
First of all the cake was made by Megan who is a professional cake baker! and her cake for her wedding day looked OUTSTANDING! The other highlight was the fact that Megan &Sam had upgraded their cake knife to a giant sword! no idea why, but I and everyone else loved it!
With Cake cut it was time for some dancing! Megan and Sam had again nailed it again by hiring an amazing band caleed Three Mile Hill – really lovely guys and super talented – Three Mile Hill got everyone the pulling some epic moves on the dancefloor!
The Evening at petney Abby — Dancing and Three Mile Hill
As the night drew in, Megan and Sam’s evening entertainment delivered in a big way. Three Mile Hill, the band they’d booked, were brilliant — talented, high-energy, and brilliant at reading the room. The dancefloor was full from the first song, and the energy didn’t let up.
Evening receptions are a completely different challenge for a wedding photographer — low light, fast movement, big emotions — and I love it. Some of the most honest, joyful photographs of an entire wedding day come from those dancefloor moments when people have completely let go and are just having the time of their lives.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Pentney Abbey
As a Norfolk wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of shooting at some incredible venues across the county. Pentney Abbey sits at the very top of that list. Here’s why:
The variety of spaces — ceremony room, grounds, gardens, rustic interiors — means there’s always somewhere new to take couples and always a fresh angle to find. The natural light throughout the venue is exceptional. The boho-rustic aesthetic lends itself to a wide range of photography styles, from clean and editorial to dark and moody. And the team at Pentney Abbey are always warm and professional, which makes the whole day run smoothly.
If you’re looking for a Norfolk wedding venue that photographs beautifully from every angle, at every time of day, in any season — Pentney Abbey is it.
Thinking About Pentney Abbey Wedding Photography?
If you’re planning a wedding at Pentney Abbey and you’re looking for a photographer who genuinely loves this venue — someone who’ll take care of you from morning prep right through to the last dance — I’d love to hear from you.
I’m based in Norfolk and photograph weddings across the county and beyond, specialising in relaxed, documentary-style coverage that captures the day as it actually feels, not just how it looks. I’m not the type of photographer who lines everyone up and shouts at them. I’m the one quietly in the background making sure no moment goes undocumented — and then occasionally stepping in to create some stunning portraits when the light is just right.
